BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Friday made it mandatory for two-wheeler dealers in the state to include helmets in the list of accessories while selling bikes.
The move is to check the growing number of road accidents in Odisha.
"If any dealer defies the order, the state government will take steps to cancel his trade certificate," said transport minister Ramesh Majhi.
The minister said it is mandatory for riders to wear helmets.
Transport commissioners and the police have been asked to take appropriate steps in this regard.
According to sources, 15,402 people died in the past four years (2010-2013) in 37,759 road accidents in the state. The number of deaths in was 3,837 from 9,413 accidents (in 2010), 3,802 from 9,398 accidents (2011), 3,701 from 9,268 accidents (in 2012) and 4,062 from 9,680 in accidents (in 2013), sources in the transport department said.
To bring down the number of accidents, the state government is also taking steps to create awareness on road safety with the involvement of school and college students.
