If you didn't know already, Rainey was one of the big figures that dominated the late '80s and the early '90s. He is an accomplished racer who won no less than three GP500 World titles in succession with Yamaha, 1991, 1992 and 1993, and also holds two AMA Superbike champion titles in 1983 with Kawasaki and 1987 with Honda.
An AMA Hall of Fame inductee since 1999 and a MotoGP Legend since 2000, Wayne Rainey was constantly involved with the road racing scene in North America. He is the president of MotoAmerica, the AMA and the FIM North America championship road racing series.
In fact, MotoAmerica is largely his creation, as Rainey insisted that North American racing needed such a racing series that would help riders prepare for the world stage and the much more prestigious World Superbike or Grand Prix series.
Kenny Roberts gifted the trike to Wayne Rainey
This ride is a very unfamiliar presence around the pits of a racing circuit, where people are most likely going to see scooters or small dirt bikes. The trike was a gift from Rainey's long-time friend and team boss Kenny Roberts.
Rainey was in Roberts' team in 1884 and between 1988 and 1993, and brought three GP500 titles, two second, and one third ranks in the premier class.
According to rideapart, Kenny Roberts got the trike from a company in Japan that was a great Rainey fan. They crafted the trike in their machining shop so that it safely and comfortably accommodates Rainey's wheel chair.
Four lithium batteries store enough juice to power Rainey's trike for around 30 miles (48 km) and the hub motor can haul the vehicle to speeds up to 48 km/h. Wayne Rainey seems very happy with his paddock trike and says he doesn't plan to make it faster or more powerful, neither to ride it outside the pits or track area.
It's really heartening to see Kenny Roberts offering such a nice gift to his equally-famous friend, and thus allow him greater mobility despite his condition.
