HMSI discontinues CB Trigger

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India discontinues CB Trigger within 30 months of launch

The engine on CB Trigger is BS III compliant and the company did not wanted to upgrade the vehicle to BS IV, as it has lined up a new 160 cc bike Honda Hornet, which will be launched around festive season.

Having had a patchy presence in the premium end of the market, Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India will be discontinuing its 150 cc bike Trigger, after selling it for merely 2 years in the Indian market. The CB Trigger will be second bike after Dazzler 150 cc, which too did not have a long life in the Indian market.

ET learns, the engine on CB Trigger is BS III compliant and the company did not wanted to upgrade the vehicle to BS IV, as it has lined up a new 160 cc bike Honda Hornet, which will be launched around festive season. While there were speculations of the company working a refreshed version of CB Trigger, but the quarterly number had clear indications on the fate of the model.

A person close to the company said, "The BS IV norms were likely to be implemented in April of 2015, but that seems to have been delayed to April of 2016. As the nation migrates to new norms, the company would have had to upgrade the Trigger, instead the company decided to focus its resources on the upcoming bike CB Hornet 160 and make it a success."

Y S Guleria, Sr VP, sales and marketing at HMSI confirmed the development to ET.

In the quarter gone by of April to June, HMSI sold merely 8,000 units of CB Trigger in the domestic market. While the plan is to discontinue the model in the domestic market, the company will continue with its exports the vehicle to some markets where BS III norms exist.

Launched exactly 26 months back in May of 2013, HMSI managed to sell about 2.25 to 2.5 lakh units of the outgoing model. Trigger had replaced Dazzler, which too did not see a long life and was in the market for 36 months.

The new CB Hornet 160 will replace the CB Trigger and it is considered as a worthy rival to the likes of Suzuki Gixxer, Yamaha FZ-S and Bajaj Auto Pulsar, which has a strong demand from the market.

The restructuring of product portfolio was needed, as HMSI wanted to a different face to today's youth and connect with them through Honda Revfest, the biggest launch even in the history of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India staged on Tuesday. And the portfolio was CB Unicorn, CBR 150, CBR 250, CBR 650 and the upcoming Hornet were considered appropriate

Guleria says, the Revfest was the first big bang event from the company to connect with the youth of this country and it had to be done in a grand way. "There was certain expectation of youth from Honda, but we were tied up with our own priorities, entering into rural, mass market, extending our position in the scooter market, with the back end activity is now in place along with new factory coming up, it is time for us to step up the game and come out of base camp with our fun (premium) bikes," said Guleria.

Experts say, the replacement of old models with a new version is a very common thing in the Indian two wheeler market. Unlike the car market, where the return on investment takes a long time, it is possible to break-even quicker in two wheelers due to low initial development cost.

The company's CB Livo 110 which was launched on Tuesday has also replaced the CB Twister, which too had limited volumes off take.
