BMW's new Stunt G 310 Single Concept

The big question is - Is this the New BMW-TVS love child?

The entry-level sportbike niche, once dominated by the Kawasaki Ninja 250, is now a crowded landscape. First Honda got into the game with its own little CBR250R, then displacements bumped a bit to the 300cc range, and both KTM and Yamaha entered the market with the release of the Duke 390 and YZF-R3. After debuting a sporty single-cylinder stunt bike concept at the Salao Duas Rodas in Sao Paulo, it appears BMW is eager to get a piece of the entry-level pie as well.

The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 features a new single-cylinder, DOHC engine with its cylinder canted rearward and the cylinder head rotated by 180-degrees. Besides helping in mass centralization, it keeps the wheelbase fairly compact even with a slightly extended swingarm. The reverse cylinder configuration also allowed BMW to mount the intake forward, too. Contrarily, the exhaust bends vertically, directly beneath the seat also helping keep the package tight and compact. Since BMW’s G 310 is built for stunt riding, tucking it in beneath the seat keeps it from getting bashed up as well. BMW says even though you don’t see the exhaust, the sound “is sure to attract attention.”

The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 was developed with help from 4X World and European stunt riding champion Chris Pfeiffer, who’s stunted everything from an F800R to a K 1600 GT.

“Stunt riding is a demanding and multi-faceted sport. Ideally you need a compact, agile bike which is also stable and robust at the same time. You have to achieve the ideal balance between aggressiveness and control,” said Pfeiffer in BMW’s press release.

With that in mind, the front of the G 310 is low and the tail section high. Special features that facilitate stunt riding include a lockable throttle grip, a large second set of calipers on the rear rotor for one-finger stopping action for times when a stunter’s foot is off the peg teamed to an additional brake lever on the left-side of the handlebars that can be operated in conjunction with the clutch lever. The Stunt G 310 has axle pegs mounted on both the fork and and tail section to give riders an assortment of options for tricks and the aluminum tail section has an opening in the center for foot placement as well. Gear ratios on the Stunt G 310 are dialed in to provide plenty of wheel-lofting power at low engine speeds and red crash bars aim to protect the single-cylinder powerplant when the inevitable crash happens. Though no weight was listed, the motorcycle is built to be light and agile.

The BMW Concept Stunt G 310’s angular bodywork completes an aggressive-looking package. The package features livery that pays tribute to the national colors of Brazil, the country which saw its debut. While the initial rendition is built for stunt riding, it wouldn’t take much to adapt it into an entry-level sportbike, which would seem to be the logical goal for BMW’s new single. While the South American market got to see it first, expect it to get further ado at the upcoming EICMA show in November.

BMW says the Stunt G 310 Concept has gear ratios that will allow plenty of wheel-lofting fun even at low engine speeds.
